Byron Cave
San Peter’s Church side

Coming out of the Portovenere canal and heading towards Riomaggiore we’ll immediately come across a small cove chosen by Byron for his meditation moments.

Its tall walls overlooking the sea, from which on one side the ancient military garrison peeps out and on the other side St. Peter’s walls appear, turn the Byron’s Cave into a very peculiar bay. We’ll anchor on the right hand side of the cove, over a rocky and sandy sea floor about 5 mt. deep. Once arrived to the bottom, we’ll reach and follow the wall that is made up of numerous gorges which offer shelter to many fish species and invertebrates too. It’s the reign of the Apogon imberbis (the kings of mullets), sea horses, nudibranchs and cnidarians too.

Upon doubling the tip of the rocky stack the wall turns into sand, where it’s common to meet mullets, soles and turbots. Here is Ugo’s burrow, a huge conger that is the “guardian” of the bay. On this part of the wall we can meet organ pipe sponges (Axinella polypoides) and the first gorgonian branches (Leptogorgia sarmentosa). Carrying on this way a wide indentation opens up where massive stones act as shelter for congers, morays, lobsters and “slipper lobsters” (Scyllarus arctus). It’s the ideal night dive.

BYRON CAVE
DORIA castle side

Coming out of the Portovenere canal and heading towards Riomaggiore we’ll immediately come across a small cove chosen by Byron for his meditation moments. Its tall walls overlooking the sea, from which on one side the ancient military garrison peeps out and on the other side St. Peter’s walls appear, turn the Byron’s Cave into a very peculiar bay. We’ll anchor on the left hand side of the cove, over a rocky and sandy sea floor about 5 mt. deep. The wall, which lowers until about 12 metres of depth on a sandy sea floor, is covered with sea daisies (Parazoanthus axinellae) and right here we can come across numerous specimens of anemone (Anemonia viridis). During each dive the divers are accompanied by shoals of salpa and sargos.
