Equa’s wreck

Equa was a submarine chaser built in 1929 owned by the Neapolitan shipping company based in Naples. The Royal Navy commandeered it on 13 May 1940 and it sank on 10 June 1944, due to a ramming by a German naval unity taking place two miles away from Punta Montenero. The submarine chaser, 45 metres long, lies in navigation trim east/west oriented. On the outer side of the hull we are 39 metres below the sea surface. Carrying on towards the prow the most interesting spot is to be found along the left wall. The first thing we meet is a heavy-machine gun complete with a turret lying left of the deck, then carrying on along the main deck we can admire a perfectly preserved anti-aircraft cannon opposite which there is a beautiful winch. Turning around the heavy-machine gun we head towards the stern on the starboard side of the ship where we can go through to what once was a corridor that leads us to the center of the ship, where pieces of a large fishing net offer shelter to a great variety of sea lives. The structure of the ship is still very solid, considering that it has been lying  on the bottom of the sea for nearly 60 years; besides we can admire large colonies of jewel anemones, lobsters, Mediterranean chromis, sponges and oysters.
